Everyday life at the Shepherd & Dog is anything but everyday. Here in our idyllic rural bolthole, we offer everything from a quiet pint to an extravagant culinary journey and all points in between, and that’s just how we like it. If you asked us about a typical day in the life of our Sussex gastropub, we’ll tell you that, to put it simply, there is no such thing.
We pride ourselves on offering something for everyone. There are a number of excellent rural pubs in Sussex, of course, but we like to think we tick all the right boxes, not just some of them. On any given day, we could be playing host to cyclists, dog walkers, reunited families, works parties, first dates, birthday parties and individuals seeking a drink and a quiet corner in which to read the daily paper.
Thanks to our location amid the picturesque splendour of the South Downs National Park, we’ve always attracted significant numbers of dog walkers and ramblers. There are a number of superb walking routes in the park itself, of course, offering views of the countryside that can soothe even the most stressed of souls. And when the walk comes to an end, we’re ready and waiting to offer the finest refreshments.
One of the best pubs for cyclists in South Downs
In recent times, more and more people have taken to two wheels to explore the scenery of Britain. There are plenty of breath-taking rides to be enjoyed in our region, and as one of the more popular cycle friendly pubs in Sussex we have become a regular stopping point for groups of all sizes. It’s not uncommon to see dozens of bikes lined up outside our pub as their owners take a well-earned break.
We’ve built up a reputation for being one of the best Sussex pubs for families, and on any given day you’d be likely to see a number of family groups savouring a meal here. As well as an extensive menu for the grown-ups, we also offer a menu for kids that features a number of mouth-watering temptations. As far as we’re concerned, the fine dining Sussex is famous for applies to the youngsters as well.
Amid all the hustle and bustle of our popular pub on a busy day, you’ll often find a few individuals in quiet corners enjoying a read. Ours is one of the largest pubs in the South Downs National Park, so there’s always room for everyone. In our sizable garden and in the bars, we offer comfy seating that’s just perfect for some rest and recuperation. We all need a little sanctuary sometimes, after all.
