The pubs in West Sussex are just one reason to visit the area

There are so many good reasons to spend time in our area, including of course the chance to spend quality time in the various pubs in the South Downs National Park. There’s something very special about relaxing when you don’t have a care in the world, and here at the Shepherd & Dog we pride ourselves on providing a sanctuary away from the pressures of everyday life. Needless to say, this corner of south-east England has many other attractions to consider.

While you’re touring the region and wondering where to find the best place to eat in Sussex, be sure to head to the iconic waterfront in Brighton. On a sunny afternoon this fabulous city – it ceased to be a town in 2000 – really comes alive, and the streets and promenade are bustling with people from all over the world. And don’t forget that when it comes to evening dining Brighton has just about everything.

One of the most popular activities in the area is cycling, and it’s a particular pleasure away from the somewhat busy streets of the towns and cities. The idyllic countryside to the north of Brighton is perfect, because the roads aren’t too busy and the picturesque scenery is a delight. And don’t forget, the Shepherd & Dog is one of the finest pubs for cyclists in South Downs.

While you’ll have plenty of choice when you seek refreshments in pubs in East Sussex and West Sussex, some of them have the added attraction of a large beer garden to enjoy when the weather is warm. In the summer, the local population is swelled by a large influx of overseas tourists but don’t worry, there’s always plenty of room at the Shepherd & Dog.

We have gained a strong reputation for offering the type of fine dining Sussex has become celebrated for, but we also bring you some stupendous light bites and sandwiches. There are times when all you want from life is a chance to settle back in a comfy chair and watch the world go by, and our garden provides the perfect excuse to do just that.

Proud to be offering the evening dining Brighton is famous for

There’s nothing quite like a night out, especially if you’re planning to explore the culinary scene offered by pubs in East Sussex and beyond. This is a part of the world that has become synonymous with good food in recent times, with visitors from across the UK and beyond heading to the region’s restaurants, pubs, cafés, bistros and diners.

Here at the Shepherd & Dog, we’re understandably proud to be one of the finest pubs in South Downs National Park, and over the years we’ve welcomed a diverse mix of people from all parts of the globe. As well as superb food, we offer a fabulous range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, amid the surroundings of a traditional rural British pub.

Many of our regulars consider the Shepherd & Dog to be the best place to eat in Sussex, and one of the reasons for their high praise surely has to be the availability of a superb pub garden. The views of the local countryside provide the perfect accompaniment to a mouth-watering lunch on a summer afternoon, especially if it comes with a craft beer or a glass of chilled wine.

We’re also one of the most popular pubs for cyclists in South Downs, so you’ll often see a number of bikes propped up against the wall here while their owners stop for some well-deserved refreshment. When you’re pedal-pushing for mile after mile of glorious Sussex countryside, it’s good to know that a relaxing break is about to unfold.

When it comes to fine dining Sussex is home to a superb selection of eateries, but we feel that few of them can tick as many boxes as the Shepherd & Dog can. If you’re in the area at any time, we would love to have the opportunity to show you why our place is so popular. In other words, why not stop awhile and see what all the fuss is about? We hope to see you here soon.

Four things that make the best pubs in East Sussex such a pleasure

We at the Shepherd & Dog are always happy to be regarded as one of the finest Sussex pubs of them all, but our pleasure never turns into complacency. We work hard to set the highest standards, and we believe there are four key aspects that need to have the highest priority at all times. Without them, we have no doubt that we’d be far less popular than we are.

  1. A warm welcome, all the time, every time

There’s something truly wonderful about some of the best rural pubs in Sussex, and we think the warmth of the welcome is key to everything. When customers come through the door, we offer a friendly hello and a warm smile. We want to be loved by our regulars, and we want occasional visitors to become regulars as well. After all, there’s a good reason why places like ours are called public houses.

  1. The fine dining Brighton people have come to expect

While we love our rural location, we’re always acutely aware that we’re close to the city of Brighton & Hove, a place that has become synonymous with exceptional culinary journeys. Here at the Shepherd & Dog, we enjoy a reputation for superb food served in convivial and comfortable surroundings, and that’s just how we like it. Next time you’re hungry come and savour the type of fine dining Sussex is famous for.

  1. Drinks for all occasions and for all customers

Every customer we welcome has his or her own unique take on what makes a drink perfect for that particular moment. The best pubs in West Sussex offer a comprehensive range of refreshments and we’re no exception to the rule. Whether you’re in the mood for craft beers, elegant wines, well-aged whiskies, exotic cocktails or you just fancy a cup of tea, you’ll find it right here at the Shepherd & Dog.

  1. A location to sigh for

There are a number of lovely pubs in the South Downs National Park, but few can boast a location that’s as lovely as ours. The idyllic village of Fulking is tucked away in a quiet corner of the park, and our fabulous pub plays host to a large garden that offers dramatic views of the surrounding countryside. In the summer months in particular, you can almost feel as though you’re in paradise.

Beer festivals bring out the best in Sussex gastropubs

As one of the most popular pubs in the South Downs National Park, we’ve always been a big fan of beer festivals. If you’ve never been to a beer festival before, you probably don’t realise what you’re missing out on. These days, there are some fabulous small breweries in the UK, each of them offering a tasty and distinctive range of craft beers covering everything from zesty lagers to dark bitters and all points in between.

We love the fact that these occasions attract customers from all across the south-east of England, including a pleasing selection of familiar faces and newcomers. Those in the former group know that we go to great lengths to provide the variety that such occasions deserve, while those in the latter group are embarking on a journey of discovery that they are highly likely to enjoy.

The Shepherd & Dog is of course rightly regarded as a highly respected Sussex gastropub, and we pull out all the stops to make sure the food is as wonderful as the beer at these events. We’ve been offering the type of fine dining Brighton has become synonymous with for many years, so if you like to eat well and drink well too, the next beer festival here deserves to be a must-try.

Everything you need for an unforgettable day

We hold beer festivals throughout the year, and those in the spring and summer come with the added attraction of a garden that ticks all the right boxes. Just imagine watching the world go by with a beer and a bite to eat, surrounded by the most glorious countryside. The views from here are spectacular, so why not come and find out for yourself?

There has been a growing trend towards lager for several decades now, but beer festivals are a great way to rediscover an interest in beers, porters, stouts and mild ales. The world of beer can be just as diverse as the world of wine, with all the nuances and subtleties that make it so wonderful. These are drinks to be savoured from the first drop right through to the last.

We love being a pub that offers something for everyone. We remain one of the most popular rural pubs near Brighton, of course, but events such as beer festivals enable us to reach out to customers from right across the region. Keep an eye on our events page for details of these festivals and other wonderful occasions.

With spring fast approaching, we’re looking forward again to welcoming an eclectic mix of people from right across Sussex and indeed all around the world.

We consider ourselves to be in a particularly wonderful location, one that attracts a great many walkers, cyclists and motorists, all seeking some well-earned solitude right here in our idyllic rural retreat. And we’re fortunate enough to be in a region which attracts huge numbers of tourists, especially of course in the summer months when the area really comes to life. And of course we’re a true community pub, a fact that brings us into contact with a large group of loyal locals.
