We all feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle now and then, and where better to do that than in the finest rural pubs near Brighton? Here in our delightful little corner of Sussex, the pace of life is slow, the food is wonderful and the drinks are refreshing. We like to think that the pubs around Devils Dyke serve as a form of sanctuary in an increasingly hectic world, so come along and find out for yourself.
If you work hard from Monday to Friday, why not get away from it all when the weekend comes around? Here at the Shepherd & Dog, we have a large and very beautiful garden, and it’s ready and waiting to bring you a golden opportunity to recharge the batteries of life. Not all the cycle friendly pubs in Sussex can offer you comfy outside seating, but ours can.
When it comes to evening dining Brighton offers a number of exceptional eateries, but it’s reassuring to know you can savour an incredible culinary journey without having to travel into the heart of the city. There are a number of gastropubs in Sussex to choose from, but we feel the plus points that we bring cannot be matched in other places.
And while we welcome plenty of visitors in the autumn and winter months, like many other Sussex pubs we come alive completely when summer comes around. As one of the finest walkers pubs in South Downs, we have plenty of foot traffic during the day, but we’re also able to provide a sanctuary for motorists, cyclists and dog owners. It’s all about having something for everyone for us.
If you are yet to sample the delights of the Shepherd & Dog, why not make the change this summer? Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun or shelter from the occasional shower, we can make it happen. Here in the chocolate box village of Fulking, one of the finest pubs in the South Downs National Park is ready to make your summer an extremely special one.

We have been a part of the community here for so many years, and sometimes it’s easy to forget that we are so much more than one of the finest pubs in Sussex. Over the last decade or more, we have worked hard to earn and develop a reputation for the type of fine dining Sussex has become famous for, and our wonderful chefs and kitchen staff continue to provide mouth-watering culinary journeys.
But there’s more to it than that for us, of course. As the warmer weather starts to arrive, we become a focal point for the two-wheeled brigade as well. On any given Saturday or Sunday lunchtime, you might see a number of bikes leaning against our outside walls, proving yet again that the Shepherd & Dog is one of the most popular cycle friendly pubs in Sussex.
And that’s not all. Thanks to our prime location right in the heart of the South Downs National Park, we’re a natural stopping point for ramblers and dog walkers. We love the fact that there are a number of superb walkers pubs in South Downs, but few of them can match the welcome we provide, and of course the stunning views offered by our picturesque rural surroundings.
